Capacity building for
inclusive lives

The National Alliance of Capacity Building Organisations (NACBO) is a national network of not-for-profit, values based, capacity building organisations.

We have a shared vision and belief that all people with a disability are valued citizens and have the right to contribute to society through social and economic participation.

NDIS Review Submission

The National Alliance of Capacity Building Organisations (NACBO) recently lodged a submission to the NDIS Review. Although we acknowledge the many positive benefits within the scheme since its inception there remains much to improve both within (the scheme) and across  supports and services to improve the genuine inclusivity of people with disability within Australian society.

See our submission with particular focus on the need for long term and whole of life capacity building for people with disability and their families, the establishment of a National Centre for Service Innovation to foster innovation across the disability sector. The critical issue of the role of mainstream services to support the genuine inclusion of people with disability from a young age is also addressed.

Self-Managed Supports Factsheet

NACBO welcomes the option for people with disability to self-manage their supports under the NDIS.

We have created a factsheet to outline why we believe self-management is important for people with disability and their families to build full and meaningful lives.

Measuring Outcomes

NACBO asked researchers at two Australian universities to undertake a two-year evaluation of the NACBO capacity-building model. The research aimed to understand what makes good capacity building that leads to authentic social inclusion, the strengths of the NACBO model, and implications to improve capacity-building policy.

The evaluation found that the principled capacity-building processes used by NACBO, directly and indirectly changed expectations, mindsets, and outcomes, for people with disability in regard to authentic inclusion. NACBO capacity-building empowered people with disability and families by increasing skills, knowledge and confidence to make changes in life.

Resourcing Employment

The member organisations of NACBO have a strong commitment to promoting and supporting the employment of people with disability.

These resources showcase the history of work we have done in this area in creating practical and outcomes-driven resources that can assist people with disability and their families, colleagues, employers and potential employers as they pursue open employment in ordinary workplaces.

The Meaning of Home Factsheet

We believe that all people with disability deserve to live in a home that is more than just a bed, a room in someone else’s home or basic shelter. Having a secure and stable home that other citizens would clearly recognise and maybe even envy can open doors to community, growth and connection.

This paper has been sent to the Disability Royal Commission and includes four recommendations that we believe would help to make stories like this part of accepted and indeed expected practice for all people with disability in Australia.
